Fight against malaria

Fight against malaria 'stalling' The UN's World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the global fight to eradicate malaria shows signs of stalling following recent success. Pedro Alonso, director of the WHO's global malaria programme, is quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying: We want [this to be] a wake-up call to the malaria community. We are not on track, and we need to get back on track." Last year the number of people infected by malaria was up by five million on the previous year. Funding has been allowed to plateau over the last 10 years, the WHO said. It also said a complacent attitude to the disease has seen a drop in the use of preventative tools such as bed nets, indoor spraying and primary healthcare. More than 400,000 people died of the disease in 2016, the vast majority being children under five.

Nigerian workers fired

Anger after thousands of Nigerian workers fired About 4,000 government employees in northern Nigeria's Kaduna state have been sacked, sparking outrage among trade unions. The state government said the workers, mainly in administrative posts, were unproductive, and were dismissed to reduce the "bloated bureaucracy" and the wage bill. Their dismissal is the latest shock for government employees: earlier this month, 22,000 teachers were fired after they failed a competency test. Labour unions say the government is sacking the workers to hire those loyal to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) party, whivh took power in elections in 2015. They have vowed to challenge the dismissals in court.

How Hard Is it to Be Truly in Love?

How Hard Is it to Be Truly in Love? We all want it, but some of us run from it. Not the chemistry or the attraction. I'm talking about the ability for "ease," which happens when we get one another. There's no threat, no weird jealousy, just a willingness and understanding that exists naturally.  It doesn't mean falling in love is all gumdrops and lollipops; it means there's a common ground at the base of the relationship. It's not about forcing our agenda. We have some control over how open or closed we are to others and their way; we also decide how open we are to real love. We may meet someone and have that ease but may not know what to do with it, so we keep looking for what we know, a partnership that is a battle for control.  The battles begin, with lines drawn in the sand, and then the nitpicking comes, while each side hopes the other will finally get it. It's a struggle and it ain't about love! Why do people walk away from ease , and go w

The Best (and Worst) Positions for Sleeping

The Best (and Worst) Positions for Sleeping For something so simple (even babies do it), sleep isn’t such an easy thing. Both too little and too much time dozing has been linked to a host of   health problems , from obesity and heart disease to dementia and diabetes. And sleep position can play a role in snoring, heartburn, and even wrinkles! Read on to see if you should switch it up in bed (remember, we’re talking sleep here). Back Sleepers Pros: Snoozing in  savasana  pose is a boon for spine and neck health, because the back is straight and not forced into any contortions. Plus back sleeping helps the  mattress  do its job of supporting the spine. In a perfect (and kind of uncomfy) world, everyone would sleep on their backs without a pillow, as this position leaves the neck in a neutral position. Using too many pillows, however, can make breathing more difficult. Back sleeping is also a winner for the more  cosmetically inclined . Spending all night wi

The 50 best African artists

News › World › Africa Art of Africa: The 50 best African artists The 50 greatest cultural figures shaping a continent In Podor in Senegal, the place where I grew up, everyone is an artist because art in Africa is not a commercial enterprise but is part of life itself. Let me explain. When I was young, I used to watch the fishermen by the banks of the Senegal river. They were working close to the desert in intense heat, and whenever they stopped working they would start to sing. In Podor, people sing naturally about their experiences, their lives and their relationships. It is not just musicians and singers who perform. Everybody has a part to play - even children are allowed to join in if they have the inspiration. It doesn't matter if your voice is not the finest; everyone is involved. Musicians are respected, but only in the context that the music itself belongs to the community - not to the person who is playing an instrument or singing a song. Those instruments have been
